Race

After a dry spell at the box office primarily due to school and college exams, comes the release of one of the most awaited films of the year. Tips Industries, the producers of the film have put in so much dedication and moolah to assure the masses that they see a flick that looks international.

The director duo, Abbas-Mastan returns with yet another thriller, but this time around a flick that is sleek and high on style. After over 6 years of waiting, the duo finally does a film with Saif and is it worth all that much?

Well to take off, the film revolves around two brothers; Ranvir [Saif Ali Khan] and Rajeev [Akshaye Khanna] who own a huge stud farm in Durban, South Africa. They breed horses on their huge ranch house and are also the biggest bookies in the horse racing circuit. Ranvir, the elder of the two, is known to be a very shrewd man. He is very aggressive and is always on the move. Rajiv, on the other hand, is very laidback and is also a chronic alcoholic.

Sophia [Katrina Kaif] is Ranvir’s personal secretary. She adores her boss and loves him. Ranvir is totally unaware of her feeling and regards her adoration as her efficiency. Sonia [Bipasha Basu] is an upcoming Indian ramp model in Durban.

Sonia loves Ranvir, but through a twist of fate gets married to Rajiv. When she discovers that Rajiv is a chronic alcoholic, things begin to get worse.

Eventually, Ranvir and Sonia come very close to each other and an affair starts between the younger brother’s wife and the elder brother. When the younger brother starts suspecting his wife, all hell breaks loose.

A murder is committed, a contract killing is issued, double crossings become the order of the day… A sharp-tongued investigative officer R.D. [Anil Kapoor] starts an investigation with his brainless assistant Mini [Sameera Reddy].

Abbas- Mastan have proved it over the years that no one can beat them when it comes to the thriller genre. With films like Khiladi , Baazigar , Humraaz ; Race might just add to their list of hits. The film has several twists and turns that keep you saying ‘oh’ and reanalyzing everything so that bits and pieces of the story fill in to form the collage called Race.

But one little factor that has to be noted is that as the duo directors attempt to make things complicated and shock the audience , they just kind of lose out on the whole plot and this con man film at the end makes the viewer wonder when did certain characters team up to plot against the others.

The screenplay of the film by Shiraz Ahmed is good but at times is loose. The 1st half of the film is quite a drag and the songs look really forced upon. Next time around, Abbas-Mastan should consider chopping some tracks. Maybe this time they couldn’t do so considering their producers are Music giants.

On the acting front, the film truly belongs to Saif. Saif looks stylish, smart and carries the adrenaline in the character perfectly. His dialogue delivery is just amazing and the action sequences considering he did them all by himself is just commendable. Watch out for Saif’s jump from a great height. It’s terrifically done courtesy Allan Amin.

With due credit to all the actors in the film, Race wouldn’t be all that racy if it wasn’t for Saif. Watch out the dialogue where he addresses his younger brother on the funda of winning-losing and on the outcome of betrayal where he blows up his jockey’s car.

Who will save the Kings tonight?

WHILE IT is pathetic to see Kings XI Punjab struggling at the bottom of Indian Premier League-II table, ‘Prince’ Yuvraj Singh must be surely missing his pacers Brett Lee and S Sreesanth, currently nursing their injuries in South Africa.

Now, the skipper’s only hope is all-rounder Irfan Pathan who is known to fire his all cylinders in a crisis situation a la the other Pathan last night. Well, it remains to be seen how successful this Pathan proves himself with ball and bat against the Bangalore Royal Challengers in Durban later tonight and does Punjab proud.

With virtually no experienced player on his side, Yuvi’s cup of sorrows seems to be overflowing. The same is the case with petite Preity Zinta whose apparent Bollywood glam and glitter have started to lose its sheen. After all, success has its own glow, which, unfortunately, is eluding the team she is heading.

As Punjab is limbering up to take on Bangalore, one can only pray for a miracle for Yuvraj and his men. With experienced Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble on their side, the Challengers certainly looks a better side on paper despite the fact that they too had their own tale of woes in this IPL, marred by bad weather, serious injuries and controversies.

Since hard-hitting is the order of the day in these Twenty-20 matches, one can surely enjoy good cricket later today with some heavy doses of fours and sixes from Yuvi, Dravid and Pathan. On the other hand, Kumble will enthrall the Durban crowd with his classic spin attack.

A rich blend of youth and experience. Well, that was the basic idea when the IPL teams were formed. With most of the young brigade failing to shine, it is no doubt the ‘golden oldies’ who are currently stealing the thunder.

Prambanan

Prambanan is a Hindu temple in Central Java, Indonesia. The temple was built in 850 CE, and is composed of 8 main shrines and 250 surrounding smaller ones.

Nearly all the walls of the temple are covered in exquisite bas relief carvings, which narrate stories of Vishnu’s incarnations, adventures of Hanuman the Monkey King, the Ramayana [wiki] epic and other legends.

Though not the biggest temple in Indonesia (Borobudur is larger - see below), Prambanan makes up in beauty and grace for what it lacks in size.

Wat Rong Khun

Wat Rong Khun in Chiang Rai, Thailand is unlike any Buddhist temples in the world. The all-white, highly ornate structure gilded in mosaic mirrors that seem to shine magically, is done in a distinctly contemporary style. It is the brainchild of renowned Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat.

Actually, the temple is still under construction. Chalermchai expects it will take another 90 years to complete, making it the Buddhist temple equivalent of the Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona, Spain!

Ghajini

Sanjay Singhania (Aamir Khan), is a rich businessman who owns a cellular phone company named Air Voice. Kalpana (Asin Thottumkal), an advertisement model goes around telling her advertisement crew that she is the love interest of Sanjay, in spite of her having never met him and also goes to the extent of giving an interview about her relationship to a popular magazine. Sanjay happens to hear about this through the media and wants to settle scores with her. On his way, he catches a fleeting glimpse of a young woman (who happens to be Kalpana) helping handicapped children cross a street. It is love at first sight for Sanjay. He moves on to confront Kalpana at her advertisement studio. He is pleasantly surprised to realize that she is the same helpful woman he saw a while ago. He chooses to hide the fact from her that he is Sanjay, calling himself as Manohar. Kalpana eventually falls in love with him.
Once, while on a train to Mumbai, Kalpana saves a group of young girls from abuse by a group of goons led by Lakshman (Pradeep Rawat). After a few days, the same goons come to Kalpana's house in order to avenge their embarrassment. Incidentally, Sanjay arrives at the scene and fights off the goons, but during the ensuing fight, Kalpana is murdered. The irony showcased is that Kalpana never finds out that he is Sanjay. Lakshman then strikes the downcast Sanjay on his head severely with a metal rod. Sanjay survives the blow, but acquires anterograde amnesia because of the trauma of his brain injury. At any given time, he does not remember anything that happened more than 15 minutes back, although he frequently has flashbacks of Kalpana's murder. He determines to take revenge on those responsible for Kalpana's death. The rest of the story is about how Sanjay, along with a medical college student Sunita (Jiah Khan), goes about finding Lakshman and the goons.

2009 Literbike Shootout

The Spoiler
By Pete Brissette

Mixing the Ducati 1198S in with a group of inline-Fours that share unprecedented similarities can be a touchy issue.

The Duc is pure racetrack sex. And for that it suffers and excels.

“When I first saw the Ducati in the flesh, I must admit to being a little wowed by the beauty of her,” commented Speed Kelly. “Like some runway supermodel dressed in high-couture fashion, it’s for sure the looker of the bunch. As my mates would say back home in Olde Blighty; "It's the dog's bollocks, innit mate!"

On the subject of the delectable 90-degree V-Twin… the power, oh baby, the power! Even the CBR’s mighty midrange is no match for the 1198 and its omnipotent 86.7 ft-lbs of torque. “If you’ve always wanted a bike that would perform effortless second-gear wheelies, this is your steed,” said Duke.

This huge amount of torque stretches out to a very healthy 150.4 hp at 9700 rpm, slightly more than a couple of our four-cylinder literbikes which were often left behind at corner exits! Of course, DTC (Ducati Traction Control) played a big part in this, and it’s one more reason the S model is out of place in this group.

The 1198S comes equipped with the high-end Ohlins suspension, well-sorted traction control and lightweight forged-aluminum Marchesini wheels that lessen steering effort, but even the base 1198 models have some of the best bike brakes on Earth. The radial-mount monoblock Brembos are frighteningly proficient at their task; only the Honda came within a stone’s throw of Brembo performance. Toss in some carbon treats to complete the pricey S package.

Developed from the World Championship-winning 1098R, it’s no surprise the stunning Ducati can find its way around a racetrack with few issues. But this titan of the track can lose much of its appeal when ridden on the street, save for its awesome noises and its sultry appearance.

Its seating position puts the rider in a very aggressive stance with lots of stress on hands and wrists. Speaking of hands, attempting a turn at full-lock results in hands being squeezed against the upper portion of the windscreen-supporting bodywork. Not good. Furthermore, the clutch is a little grabby, the tranny is rather notchy compared to the Japanese entrants, the fueling can feel abrupt from closed-to-open throttle, its mirrors are nearly useless, and its instruments are difficult to read.

Our 1198S test unit arrived with the springs in its race-bred Ohlins suspension set for someone resembling John Goodman. Instead of wrenching on preload adjusters to set the proper sag for our lighter weights, a lack of time forced us to just jump on the thing and ride it on the street as is. A similar story was seen at Willow – we were so focused on adequately evaluating the literbikes that the Duc sadly was largely neglected, including its suspension.

When Kevin and Steve were able to take it out for a few laps, they found the Ducati difficult to ride with its little to no rear suspension sag. However, I wasn’t as bothered by this issue, and my time aboard the Duc at Willow Springs instantly reminded me of how unflinchingly stable and responsive it was during my time at the bike’s world press launch in Portimao, Portugal.

The bike worked fairly well for me, but I couldn’t deny some of the harshness the guys lamented. Still, I find this a neat example of how set-up between riders yields such varied experiences.

I’m convinced that with equal resources of time and expertise for set-up, the Duc would’ve left the Four from Japan crying in their Asahi beer. But, with several thousand dollars worth of extra goodies, it damn well better be the best!

Nissan 370Z 2009 Silver

INFO:
Latest NISMO Z® Hits the Streets in June With 350-horsepower 3.7-liter V6, NISMO-tuned Suspension, Aerodynamic Body and Unique Interior Treatments –

The all-new, second generation NISMO 370Z, which is set to go on sale at Nissan retailers nationwide in June 2009, continues the tradition of the original by offering unique performance and design attributes that true sports car enthusiasts are looking for – straight from the factory. Like the limited production NISMO 350Z introduced two years earlier, the new NISMO 370Z is a tuner-Z® enthusiast’s dream, featuring a 350-horsepower 3.7-liter V6, racing-inspired exterior and interior styling, a specially tuned suspension and special super-lightweight 19-inch forged alloy wheels.

The 2009 NISMO 370Z was developed by NNA’s Specialty Vehicles Group in conjunction with Autech Japan, Nissan’s longstanding conversion partner.

“The NISMO name is known throughout the world as the leading supplier of race-bred, factory-tuned, extreme performance Nissan parts, accessories and vehicles,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA). “The new, second-generation NISMO Z® proudly – and deservedly – wears the NISMO badge, carrying on the tradition of bringing racing-inspired performance and engineering to the street.”

The all-new NISMO 370Z is offered in one completely equipped model (no options) with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission only.

Dynamic Performance And Handling Comes Standard

The new NISMO 370Z starts with the unmatched foundation of an advanced Nissan FM (Front Midship) platform, refined 4-wheel independent suspension and 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL). The VVEL system helps optimize intake valve open/close movements, allowing the needed air to be sent promptly to the combustion chamber at the precisely optimized time. For its use in the NISMO 370Z, the 3.7-liter VQ-series V6 produces 350 hp @ 7,400 rpm and 276 lb-ft of torque @ 5,200 rpm. The NISMO Z®’s enhanced engine power and acceleration is provided through use of an exclusive H-configured exhaust system design and muffler tuning, along with optimized ECM (Engine Computer Module) control.

The NISMO 370Z is offered only with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission with Nissan’s new “SynchroRev Match” function, the world’s first synchronized downshift rev matching manual transmission system. The “SynchroRev Match” function automatically controls and adjusts engine speed when shifting to the speed of the next gear position, essentially “blipping” the throttle to smooth out any up/down shifts. This not only allows the driver to focus more on braking and steering, it improves vehicle balance and smoothness by reducing the typical “shock” when the clutch is engaged. The system can be deactivated with a button next to the shifter for drivers who prefer less vehicle intervention.

The NISMO 370Z features a tight, rigid body structure with a strut tower bar brace and a pair of performance dampers, which quickly and efficiently react to and control body vibrations from road input via the tires, contributing to the NISMO 370Z’s outstanding stability and performance feel.

The NISMO Z®’s double-wishbone front/4-link rear suspension design suspension is specially tuned for exceptional stability and handling. Compared to a standard Nissan 370Z Coupe, front spring rates have been dialed up 15%, rear spring rates 10%, front stabilizer bar rate upped 15% and the rear stabilizer bar is 50% stiffer. The roll stiffness rate has been increased by 15% and front and rear damping factors have been increased by 40% and 140% respectively.

The NISMO 370Z rides on unique 5-spoke Nissan-branded 19-inch RAYS forged aluminum-alloy wheels (19x9.5-inch front, 19x10.5-inch rear) mounted with Yokohama ADVAN Sport Y-rated high-performance tires (P245/40ZR19 front, P285/35ZR19 rear).

Bringing the NISMO 370Z to a stop are standard NISMO Sport Brakes with large diameter 14.0-inch front and 13.8-inch rear vented rotors with 4-piston front and 2-piston rear aluminum calipers. The braking system also includes a variable ratio brake pedal for a more direct pedal stroke feel, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). A Viscous Limited-Slip Differential (VLSD) is standard on all NISMO 370Zs, along with Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC).

Responsive steering is provided by a vehicle-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion design that has been reworked (versus the NISMO 350Z design) with redesigned mounting bushings and a column insulator to provide improved response. Unwanted steering kickback and vibrations are reduced with the use of a solenoid valve that acts like a damper when there is a harsh impact load.

Unique NISMO 370Z Exterior and Interior

Along with its standout performance, the new NISMO Z® offers a standout appearance inside and out. The functional and fully integrated aerodynamic body pieces include an extended front nose design with a canard design at each corner for improved downforce and a fully integrated chin spoiler. The NISMO 370Z has an overall length of 174.3 inches.

Special side sills and a unique rear bumper help control airflow under the vehicle, while the functional rear spoiler increases downforce. The NISMO 370Z exterior also includes a wide stance, sculptural fenders, upswept quarter windows, bold “boomerang” shaped headlights and taillights, vertical door handles and aluminum hood, door panels and hatchback. The headlights are a High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-functional xenon design with an auto on/off feature.

“One look at the dramatic NISMO 370Z body and you know that this isn’t your everyday sports car,” said Castignetti. “The styling is highly emotional yet totally functional – expressing dynamic movement while enhancing airflow and downforce for enhanced aerodynamic performance.”

The NISMO 370Z is offered in five exterior colors: Pearl White, Brilliant Silver, Magnetic Black, Solid Red and Platinum Graphite.

The NISMO 370Z’s driver-centric interior includes NISMO logo seats with black and red fabric and red stitching, a NISMO tachometer, steering wheel with smooth leather and red parallel stitching, smooth leather-wrapped shift knob and aluminum trimmed pedals. A special serialized plaque of authenticity, located on the vertical panel above the floor-mounted console, is matched to each NISMO Z®, identifying its unique serial and model year designation.

The NISMO 370Z’s 2-seat interior layout is built around a deeply scooped instrument panel with a full-length center console separating the driver and passenger’s seat. In the rear is an open cargo area with enhanced storage and accessibility. The instrument panel includes a 3-pod cluster with oil temperature, voltmeter and clock, while the speedometer and tachometer include an “initial sweep” function, coming alive when the NISMO Z? is first started.

Both the driver and passenger’s seats are structured with an anti-slip material in the main seating surface. The sporty woven cloth seats feature standard 8-way driver’s/4-way passenger manual adjustments. Adjustable front seat Active Head Restraints are standard.

Standard interior comfort and convenience features include Nissan Intelligent Key® with Push Button Start, power windows with one-touch auto up/down feature, power door locks with auto-lock feature, a center console box with a new non-intrusive cover design, automatic climate control, rear window defroster with timer, two 12-volt power outlets, four cupholders (two in door panels, two in center console), dual overhead map lights and a AM/FM/CD/AUX 4-speaker audio system with illuminated steering wheel-mounted controls.

“The NISMO logo is prominent throughout the cabin, reinforcing the mission and special capability of the vehicle,” said Castignetti. “The NISMO Z® is the complete package – inside, outside and under the skin.”

The NISMO Z’s long list of standard safety and security features includes the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual-stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt and occupant classification sensors; front seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags; roof-mounted side-impact air bags; seat belts with pretensioners and load limiters, Active Head Restraints, Zone Body Construction with front and rear crumple zones, Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System, Vehicle Security System and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Dubai: Vertical City, 2.4 km (1.5 miles) Tall

Dubai - Stretching its six intertwining building components into a tower 2.4 kilometres high, Dubai City Tower is expected to be the latest architectural vision to capture the attention of citizens.
The ‘Vertical City', as it is described, is an architect's proposal that began circulating in emails and at a skycraper forum last week, but its origins are yet to be determined.

The professional project pitch details 400 habitable stories, topped by a 400m energy-producing spire, making it 2.4km high.

By comparison, Emaar's Burj Dubai is largely predicted to be around 800m high and 160 floors.

A "mile-high tower" in Jeddah has been planned by Kingdom Holdings, while Nakheel is building Al Burj, which, according to project sources, will have a final height of 1.28km, although the developer is keeping the details under wraps.

But neither an architect nor a developer detailed on the plans for the Dubai City Tower. Major developers Emaar, Nakheel, Dubai Properties and Damac categorically denied to Khaleej Times any involvement or awareness of the project.

However, the proposal of such an engineering feat is indicative of the environment of possibilities Dubai has created for tall towers, according to Steven Oehme, Regional Director of Value Management and Sustainability at Hyder Consulting Middle East.

"It is certainly possible," Oehme said. "You can't just use today's technology, but it can be planned and the possibilities are there. Fifteen years ago, there was nothing even half the height of the Burj Dubai."

The time frame from drawing board to construction and completion for such developments, in this case termed a super-tall skyscraper, often banks on future technologies.

A "Mega-city Pyramid" proposed for Tokyo Bay in Japan needs a structure of incredibly strong, light materials still being developed.

While Burj Dubai is expected to be completed in September 2009, five years after the construction started, the one-kilometre-high tower Mubarak Al Kabir in Kuwait is estimated to take 25 years to complete since its announcement was made last year.

Oehme said the flurry of architect proposals, and buildings under construction, could speed up technology and encourage more investment in tall towers.

"People didn't really see the significance of building that tall," he said.

"There wasn't an environment that supported a building that tall. The Petronas Towers in Malaysia changed all that."

They held the mantle for nearly a decade."

Now, in the Gulf region, Burj Dubai is a year from completion. Khaleej Times has learnt Al Burj plans are being finalised and recently Timelinks announced plans for the Ziggurat, a 1.2-kilometre-high pyramid city to house one million people.

Oehme said the feasibility of a project like Dubai City Tower was highly technical and wondered how many of the proposals would materialise.

"It's not just a matter of scaling things up. Every factor has to be considered. In ten years there could be two or three tall towers in the region or there could be 20 or 30. But now, our understanding of tall towers is enormous," Oehme said.

Nokia N95

Ever since the Nokia N95 first debuted back in September 2006, it's been one of the most anticipated and highly coveted smart phones. In fact, Nokia didn't even have plans to bring the N95 to the United States, but after the high number of requests from U.S. customers, the company finally decided to ship the hot smart phone across the pond. What's all the hubbub about, you ask? Well, let's see: it boasts a 5-megapixel camera that can also record VGA-quality video, a robust media player with a 3.5mm headphone jack, a dual-slider design, and integrated GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. Not to mention, it's a Symbian smart phone as well.

Unfortunately, when you've got an overhyped phone like this, there's bound to be some disappointments. First, the N95 does not work on the United States' 3G network (namely, Cingular/AT&T's HSDPA network) for high-speed Web browsing and data transfer, which is a major disappointment. Also, all of the phone's features take a toll on the device's battery and processor, as standby battery life was pretty sad and performance was somewhat sluggish. But do the pros outweigh the cons? Is it worth paying the $750 for the phone? Well, we're not 100 percent sold. We so desperately wanted to like this phone, but for that money, we want a device that can keep up with our demands and not require us to go running to the outlet to constantly recharge. Plus, we'd also like the see the inclusion of 3G. Still, we know there are the gadget lovers and tech enthusiasts out there that will plunk down the Benjamins for this high-end phone, and we can't deny that you'll get your fill of features. The Nokia N95 is available now unlocked (for use with Cingular and T-Mobile SIM cards) through Nokia's flagship stores, select wireless retailers, and online.

Design
Considering all the features that are packed into the Nokia N95, you'd think it would be a pretty hefty phone, but not so, my friends. The N95 measures a compact 3.8 inches long by 2.1 inches wide by 0.8 inch thick and weighs only 4.2 ounces. It feels comfortable to hold, and the soft-touch finish on the back of the device makes it easier to grip. That said, we couldn't help but think that the phone felt, well, kind of cheap. In particular, the front cover felt plasticky and rickety (more on this below). From an aesthetic standpoint, the N95 certainly falls more into the short and stocky category rather than svelte and sexy, but we think it's still a good-looking phone with its plum-and-silver color scheme.

Features
It's hard to decide where to begin with the feature-packed Nokia N95, but since imaging is one of its biggest draws, we'll start there. The N95 is equipped with an impressive 5-megapixel camera--unheard of in the cell phone and smart phone world--with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens. (Carl Zeiss was an optician who first started manufacturing lenses for microscopes and then used his expertise for camera lenses.) The breadth of customization and editing options available on this phone is astounding--almost like an actual digital camera. You can choose from seven shooting modes, ranging from close-up to sports to night portrait, and five quality settings. You can adjust the brightness, contrast, white balance, color tone, ISO light sensitivity, and exposure value to get the best picture possible. The flash even has a red-eye reduction option. Plus, there's also a self-timer and a sequence mode for multiple shots.

The N95 can record video at a maximum VGA resolution (640x480) at 30 frames per second, though you also have a choice of four other quality settings. The N95 can record video with sound in MP4 or 3GP (for multimedia messages) format, and length is only limited by the available memory. There's a handy timer that shows you how much video time you have based on the memory and the quality setting (this feature is available in camera mode as well). Editing options are a little more limited in video mode; you only get two shooting modes (automatic and night) and white balance and color tone settings. In addition, there's a video stabilization feature to help reduce camera shake as you're recording video.

IPL 2: Bollywood's bad run continues in cricket too!

The first quarter of the year 2009 will go down as one of the worst in Bollywood history, what with majority of films biting the dust and the unending tussle between the producers-distributors and the multiplexes, which has added to the woe. Multiplex owners who had hoped that the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches would bring in some revenues were disappointed as they were not given the rights to telecast the matches.

For Bollywood too, the first two days of the Indian Premier League has turned out to be very disheartening (unlike last year) with bad luck continuing to haunt them here as well.

All those who are still confused, Bollywood is represented by famous and glamorous personalities like Shilpa Shetty, Preity Zinta and Shah Rukh Khan, all of whom are the owners of three different teams. To cut a long story short, new entrant Shilglamsham.compa Shetty's Rajasthan Royals (last year's winner), Preity Zinta's Kings XI Punjab and Shah Rukh Khan's Kolkata Knight Riders have all lost to their opponents in their opening matches.

However, these are early days and here is wishing for a resounding comeback for Bollywood, both on the cricket pitch as well as the box-office.....

Aishwarya is the woman on top!

There have never been any doubts about Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s star power, and proving it is a survey conducted by a research agency called Hansa Research. In an extensive study conducted by the company to measure celebrity power in India, it was found that Ash is one of the most persuasive and liked celebs in the country. She even garnered a 98.8% recognition rating, which puts her on par with legends like father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan and cricket sensation Sachin Tendulkar.

According to the list, the beauty queen is placed well above newcomers like Priyanka Chopra, Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, and even veteran actress Madhuri Dixit. The study made an effort to measure the power of star qualities like popularity, media presence, power of persuasion and image aspects. And in an interesting twist, Ash is the only woman on the top ten list of recognized celebs from different walks of life. It’s no surprise given that the lady is extremely popular among the classes and masses!

2008 Honda CBR1000RR

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was the estimable location this time around, and my day lapping the historic NorCal circuit proved this clean-sheet-design double-R performs at a level beyond its two-year-old predecessor, never mind the seemingly docile 10-year-old one. I came into this sessions already thrilled with the stellar new ZX-10R Kawasaki I rode last month in Qatar. To even rank in that league, the CBR needed to be something special. It is.

A phalanx of CBRs with tire warmers sit on stands, resplendent in five different color combinations, greeted us sitting in the same pit stalls the MotoGP teams use each July. This ’08 model, dubbed internally as MFL (previously the MEL), has a countenance that polarizes opinions. Gone are most of the sharp creases of the MEL, replaced with arching curves that suggest a more organic bent. Some dig it; some don’t.

Up front is a snubby nose that mimics the abbreviated proboscis of the RC212V MotoGP bike, something Honda says makes for easier steering transitions at speed. Dual ram-air ducts below the rounder headlights route cool airflow through the frame rails rather than the solo center-mount design of the 600RR. The new CBR1K’s rear area looks light and airy thanks to the relocation of the former bike’s underseat exhaust to a bulky unit somewhat camouflaged under the engine.

Anyway, the CBR’s nothing more than a blur if you’re watching it rocket up Laguna’s front-straight, accelerating so quickly that you’d swear it would get air under its wheels if its pilot had the cojones to keep the throttle pinned over the crest of the hill. This newest CBR has some stones of its own, hurtling out of corners with the addictive thrust of a mighty literbike.

Last year’s CBR trailed the pack in terms of peak power, so Honda threw out the old 998.6cc inline-Four and built a new 999.8cc version. (C’mon, guys, you’re giving up 0.19cc while remaining below the 1000cc limit!) Its bore has gone up 1mm while its stroke is 1.5mm shorter than before. Also new are titanium intake valves, slightly larger than previous. Cams are lighter by 1.1 lb thanks to a new, chilled, thin-wall, ductile steel casting process that allows a reduced wall thickness, and its cylinder head is narrower by 15mm and lighter. Overall, the engine has lost more than 5 lbs.

Getting Honda representatives to divulge closely held information is easier than getting al-Qaeda to talk, but not by much. Still, a short waterboarding session revealed this new 1000RR is pushing nearly 7% more power. Our 2007 CBR test bike cranked out a rather modest 148 hp, so we expect this new one to spit out nearly 160 hp at its rear wheel.

It can now run with the big dogs at the track. But even more impressive from a seat-of-the-pants perspective is the bump in midrange power. The’07 bike was at or near the top of the pack in terms of twist below 9000 rpm, but this new CBR easily puts the old one on the trailer. It was rather impressive to have the front wheel soar off the ground in a controllable power wheelie while exiting the second-gear Turn 3, no squidly clutch dump required.

Ah, a new Honda literbike. Lighter, of course. Faster, too. And with a bit more than 110 horsepower making its way to the rear wheel, this CBR is a rocket!

“Huh? Dude, the 2008 CBR1000RR better have more power than that!”

Indeed it does, but I was flashing back a decade to the first press launch of my motojournalist career. The changes made to the 1998 CBR900RR made it the best big CBR ever, and I was awed by how fast yet controllable that new scalpel was.

Now, a little more than 10 years later, I’m again in the seat of the best literbike Honda has yet crafted. Compared to the RR I rode in ’98, it weighs less and has nearly 50 additional horses.

Freddie Spencer, a multi-time world champ roadracer who was at the event, stresses in his High Performance Riding School how important it is to make smooth transitions when riding a bike near its limit. And this is something Jon Row, American Honda’s Manager of Motorcycle Press, reminded the assembled journalists. “The thing that separates a good rider from bad is their ability to make smooth transitions,” he said, adding that the 23 patents filed for the CBR is “technology to assist transitional technique.”

First seen on last year’s CBR600RR, the IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) is basically an air-bleed valve that allows some air to be introduced downstream of throttle valves. This apparently “improves previously unstable combustion” to minimize abruptness when applying throttle or coming off it by allowing some intake air to bypass the 46mm throttle bodies, also slightly reducing engine braking.

Further aiding smooth braking transitions is perhaps the best slipper clutch I’ve yet sampled. A clutch that limits back-torque during high-rpm downshifts while braking is nothing new, but this one works seamlessly and has an ingenious design.

There are two problems with most slipper clutches: they are heavy and they require stiff clutch springs, the latter resulting in a heavy lever pull. But this new patented design developed with Japanese company FCC uses cams that apply a tighter squeeze on the clutch plates while under acceleration, thereby allowing moderate rates for the clutch springs. Creating a lighter lever pull allowed for a cable-actuated design instead of a hydraulic unit that is heavier.

John Cena in 12 Rounds

I have come to terms with the fact that if my wife is ever kidnapped by a crazed psycho who is holding her life in the palm of his sadistic hand, she is probably not going to make it. Not if I have to do the things that movie heroes do. Hopefully for her sake nutso will demand I solve a crossword puzzle in 15 minutes or edit audio with one hand tied behind my back instead of scaling a building, climbing an elevator shaft or driving a fire truck across town at blazing speeds. We can only hope. But granted that would make one boring of an action flick.

In the new film 12 Rounds, Det. Danny Fisher (John Cena) is put through 12 “tests” by an escaped madman, Miles Jackson (Aidan Gillen). The reward for passing these tests is the safe return of Fishers girlfriend Molly (Ashley Scott). It is a race against the clock in this James Patterson like plot line. With each challenge Fisher has to also stay one step ahead of the FBI who have their own reasons for wanting to see Jackson caught. So to keep his girlfriend alive he has to solve the puzzles and get to the next step before the feds.

This is an action movie at its core and there is enough stuff smashing and exploding to please the die hard fans. Plus it adds the cat and mouse element for those who at least want something cerebral to cling to. Though the life line in this one is quite thin. Still, it does what you would expect a film starring a famous wrestler like Cena to be. Lots of brawn and little brain. But don’t read me wrong; that is not Cena. Though written that way Cena and his character Fisher have both the intellect and the smarts to do what needs to be done. I had a chance to ask Cena about the heart of his character and he said, “Fisher is just the average guy next door who wants to go to work each day and come home and be with his family. He isn’t a hero but is put in a position to be one.” I am not sure that most of your average guys next door are the size of a bus with hands like a catchers mitt, but I see his point.

I grew up a fan of wrestling but never did I see Macho Man Savage, King Kong Brody or Nature Boy Rick Flair gracing my theater screen. I asked Cena why there is the trend now to cross over. He said, “It only makes sense. Wrestling is a multi billion dollar industry with familiar faces. It is smart for filmmakers to use that notoriety to help sell an action film.” Which is true, I mean, who would believe me in that role. Cena went on to point out that it is not the size of the guy but the heart of the character to do what has to be down. If you say so John.

12 Rounds is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action. It is fast paced and action filled and void of much language or extreme violence. Fans of Cena the wrester and action films in general will more than likely find this satisfactory. I wish they would have spent a little more time developing the challenges or making them even more intriguing. But in the end it is more about stuff blowing up, and I can understand that too. I give 12 Rounds 3.5 out of 5 biceps. It does the genre justice and that should be worth something. Instead of tearing it apart, just check your brain at the door and have some fun.

2009 Ferrari California

Just as more spy shots of the rumored “Baby Ferrari” begin surfacing, the Italian automaker has decided to blow the cover off their newest vehicle, the gorgeous California, with a trio of official photos.
Offered only as a folding hardtop convertible, the California aims to sate the desires of the ultrarich who crave both open-air and Grand Tourer experiences. Powering the California will be Ferrari’s familiar 4.3-liter, flat-crank V-8, here with direct injection and mounted in a front-mid position and producing 454 horsepower at 7500 rpm, down from the 483 and 503 in the mid-engined F430 coupe/Spider and F430 Scuderia, respectively. The chassis and body panels will be crafted—as is the case with all Ferraris—in aluminum, and Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes will be standard.
The California is mechanically related to both the Maserati GranTurismo and Alfa Romeo 8C, which might make this the hottest set of triplets since, well, ever. The rear suspension is a new multilink setup, which deviates from the control arm approach used for the rest of the Ferrari lineup (and the GranTurismo and 8C, too). Seating is said to be a 2+ arrangement, which implies a rear seat, but the photos suggest that it will be little more than vestigial, a leather-lined shelf for your Prada briefcase.

In big news, putting the Prancing Horse’s ponies to the pavement will be a new, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, a first for Ferrari. While Ferrari has had great success reducing the shift times to mere milliseconds with its Formula 1–derived F1 sequential manual gearbox, it’s never been able to make the shifts smooth enough for comfortable use in regular driving, particularly in automatic mode; this new box should fix that. Acceleration will be neck-snapping, as the automaker claims a 0-to-62-mph gallop of less than four seconds.

The “Baby Ferrari” nickname will likely prove to be misleading in terms of price, as Ferrari is positioning the California as a shoulder-to-shoulder GT peer to its own 612 Scaglietti, which sports a sticker of around $270,000. While the California will not likely cost nearly as much as that, some rumors have this car priced commensurate with today’s F430, whose replacement model will become even more technologically intensive—and therefore more expensive.

As such, we expect the California to come in just under $200,000, but going on looks alone—the achingly beautiful styling is inspired by both the 599GTB Fiorano and classic Ferraris of the past—we’re going to go ahead and say it’ll be worth whatever they ask.

Ferrari has set up a Web site with high-quality sound clips of the engine, as well as a live timer indicating when the next details are to be released. It also promises photos and what it’s calling “highly gratifying virtual road tests” some time in the future. The live reveal will take place October 1st at the 2008 Paris auto show.

Dhoom 2

Dhoom 2 is the sequel to the hit film Dhoom. The film has been produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Sanjay Ghadvi. The music of Dhoom was a super hit and the promotional song sung by Tata Young was sensational and appealing to the masses. Naturally there are high expectations from the movie as well as its music. The film is one of the most awaited films of the year and this adventurous action packed thriller is said to have loads of hi-tech special effects and some amazing stunts. Dhoom 2 has been shot in some sizzling locations like Rio, Namibia and South Africa. The film has some of the characters who were seen in the prequel, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra and several new faces like Hrithik Roshan in a negative role, Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu. The music of the film has been composed by Pritam once again; Salim and Sulaiman Merchant and the songs have been rendered by artists Sunidhi Chauhan, K.K, Sonu Nigam, Alisha Chinai, Vishal Dadlani and even actress Bipasha Basu. The music album has some mass appeal songs and on the whole the music score is above average but unfortunately falls short when compared to Dhoom music album and hence is a bit disappointing.

Dhoom Again- This is the title track of the film and begins with a very catchy whistle. The tune is reminiscent of the original Dhoom Machale tune. Vishal Dadlani croons this number which has a high quotient of English lyrics and he is accompanied by the female voice of Dominique Cerejo. The beats are fast, peppy and heavy sounding. A number of musical instruments like the electric guitar and drum are heard. The tune, style and lyrics attempt to give it an extremely western touch but it still retains a popular mass Indian appeal with its heavy beats and punch packed rhythm. Although the song is peppy and energetic when compared with the earlier theme song which rocked the nation it is a bit of a downer. Nonetheless its vivacious and energetic appeal will make it quite popular in its own way.
Score: 8/10

Dajjal has Born in Israel

One of the prominent events preceding the Day of Judgement is the appearance of Dajjal. We have been apprised of many aspects of Dajjal both in the Qur’an and the Ahadis. In fact, the Muslims have been more informed about the Dajjal by the Holy Prophet than previous nations by their respective prophets. Dajjal will appear somewhere between Iraq and Syria, after the Battle of Istanbul takes place. The name in the Ahadis is Constantinople, which is the former name of Istanbul. Dajjal will be a Jew. His distinguishing feature is that he will be one-eyed and the word “Kafir” or “unbeliever” will be written on his forehead. That he is a Jew is confirmed from another hadis, which says that his followers will be mainly of Jewish religion.

Dajjal will be a powerful personality in this world. He will attract loads of people; his voice will be heard in the East and the West. The latter, given the present day communication technology in the form of satellite television and Internet, doesn’t seem surprising.

The main aim of Dajjal will be to try and convince people that he is God Almighty. He will try and deviate people from the Right Path and join his ranks. To achieve that end and to convince people with true faith, he will kill and then re-create the same person. This will prove to be sufficient to gain him more followers, especially the ones who have weak faith. But we must remember at all times, that he will definitely not be anywhere near God.

Dajjal will travel the whole world. The only place where he will not be able to enter is Makkah and Madinah. “It will at this very time that Allah will send Christ, son of Mary. He will descend at the white minaret on the eastern side of Damascus, wearing two garments lightly dyed with saffron and placing his hands on the wings of two Angels. When he lowers his head, there will fall beads of perspiration from his head, and when he raises it up, beads like pearls will scatter from it. Every non-believer who smells the odour of his body will die and his breath will reach as far as he is able to see. He will then search for him (Dajjal) until he catches hold of him at the gate of Ludd and kills him.”

Salman Khan Biography

The name Salman Khan sparks several images: his reluctance to wear shirts, his sculpted chest, his frequent run-ins with the law, his gorgeous ex-girlfriends, his good looks (voted by People magazine in 2004 as the 7th most good looking man in the world and the first in India) and his unquestionable status as one of three reigning Khans of Bollywood.
The Actor
1988–1993 He played a supporting role in the film Biwi Ho Tho Aisi released in 1988.
It was followed by the extremely successful 1989 hit Maine Pyaar Kiya, winning him the Filmfare Best Debut Award. This was followed by a string of films like Bhaaghi, Sanam Bewafa, Pathar Ke Phool and Saajan, which did very well at the box office. The films released in 1992 and 1993 were pretty average.
1994-1999 He came back to the top of the charts with his films Andaz Apna Apna with Aamir Khan and the opulent family drama Hum Aapke Hai Kaun opposite Madhuri Dixit, which is considered to me one of the biggest blockbusters of Bollywood. He played the role of Arjun in Karan Arjun with Shah Rukh Khan in 1995. Khamoshi-The Musical was the best of his 1996 films and was critically acclaimed. 1997 was again a bleak year for Salman. He made up for it in 1998 with Pyaar Kiya Tho Darna Kya with Kajol and his appearance in the hit Kuch Kuch Hota Hai as Aman, which won him the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor award. In 1999, he co-starred with Karishma Kapoor in the hit comedy Biwi No.1. He starred with Aishwarya Rai and Ajay Devgan in the love story Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam which made waves in India and overseas. The film Hello Brother carried a family tag on it as he starred alongside his brother Arbaaz Khan and it was directed by his brother Sahil Khan.
2000-2008 Salman continued to churn out several films. Some did fairly well like Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega in 2000 and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke in 2001, both films in which he worked with Rani Mukherjee and Preity Zinta. None of his movies that came out in 2002 worked well. He made up for it with Tere Naam in 2003 that not only did well at the box office but his performance was appreciated widely. He played the role of an AIDS patient in Phir Milenge that came out in 2004. The World Health Organisation commended the film for it’s portrayal of AIDS. Mujhse Shaadi Karoge in 2004, Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? in 2005 and funnies like No Entry in 2005 and Partner in 2007 kept his fans hooked. His Hollywood venture with Ali Larter, Marigold: An Adventure In India was flopped. He took over from Jim Carrey in God Tussi Great Ho in 2008, based on the Hollywood comedy Bruce Almighty. He has put in an appearance in Hello, which is adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s book One Night at a Call Center.

BMW Z4 M

The Z4M Coupe and Roadster are the fastest models in the Z4 line-up, powered by a 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine with 343bhp. Compared to other M models this may seem fairly tame but thanks to its light weight the Z4M is still thunderously quick with a 0-62mph time of 5 seconds. However it's not a particularly easy or relaxing car to drive day to day with a heavy clutch and gear change, over sensitive throttle and a crashy ride. In fact it’s difficult to justify paying the extra over the standard Z4 3.0-litre, as that is only a little slower but is easier to live with and much cheaper to buy and run. Unfortunately the Z4M doesn't live up to the standards of the other M models from BMW.

2009 Yamaha V-Star 950

To find out how this new entry performs, we accepted Star’s invite to ride it in the hilly backroads of north Georgia. A phalanx of 950s glistened under the morning sun in its four colors and two iterations: a standard version and the Tourer, the latter with a windscreen, leather-wrapped hard saddlebags and a passenger backrest.
Seeing the bike in the flesh, its styling isn’t revolutionary but is a fresher take on the traditional cruiser profile. Its proportions are nicely balanced, especially on the right side where the two-into-one exhaust anchors the flowing silhouette. Cast-aluminum wheels with polished rims are an attractive touch, with the front hoop extra visible on the right side due to the single front brake rotor. Upper fork leg covers add some butchness to the 41mm Kayaba unit, while an intentional gap in the frame below the steering head offers the impression of lightness. The 4.4-gallon fuel tank is curvaceous, and a large chrome airbox cover juts out proudly between the two cylinders. It’s all tastefully done if not ground-breaking.

Stevie Nicks Skewers Lindsay: "Get a Grip"

Los Angeles (E! Online) – As if Lindsay Lohan wasn't having a rough enough week already.

Fresh off her breakup from Samantha Ronson, her reported snubbing by Nicole Richie and Drea de Matteo and threats that she may be faced with a restraining order, she's now taking heat from the unlikeliest of Hollywood mean girls: Stevie Nicks.

The 60-year-old Fleetwood Mac singer lashed out at the 22-year-old in an interview with The New York Times. Nicks was asked about long-simmering reports that the redhead-once-more would like to buy the rights to the rocker's life and portray the singer on film.

"Over my dead body," Nicks said.

Why?

"She needs to stop doing drugs and get a grip. Then maybe we'll talk," explained Nicks, herself a recovering addict.

Guess Nicks isn't a fan of Method acting…or keeping track of her own quotes.

Two years ago, the rocker publicly praised Lohan—albeit in a backhanded sort of way—by saying she was more concerned about fellow wild child Britney Spears' behavior than the budding thesp's, saying, "I think Lindsay is a serious actress."

Lo on Lauren: Speidi Could Replace Her on The Hills

Los Angeles (E! Online) – Lo Bosworth may not want to see her best friend Lauren Conrad leave The Hills, but she does think the series can survive without her.

In fact, Lo thinks Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt could probably replace Ms. Conrad as the MTV reality show's headlining act.

"They get great press on their own, so there's always the possibility that the show can do really well with them as main parts," Bosworth told us last night at the IS vodka-sponsored opening of new Hollywood nightspot Halo.

Lo thinks, however, that season five may not end all L.C. appearances on The Hills...

"[Lauren] hasn't filmed in weeks and she's really excited about that," Lo said. "I think she'll come back for special occasions and stuff, but we just don't know how many episodes she'll return for or if there will be another season. It's really just all up in the air."

If Speidi does become the main attraction, a title change may be in order. Forget The Hills! Don't you think Divorce Court sounds so much more fun?
